Looking for a Hocus Pocus tea recipe that'll blow your socks off (and, not get your "knickers in a twist")? For both lifelong fans and newbies, there's no better way to celebrate the season and channel the spirit of Halloween than having a Hocus Pocus movie marathon. Surely you'll already have a ton of snacks at the ready, but what about warming up with a warm mug of Hocus Pocus themed tea? This magical brew will transport you straight into the world of the Sanderson Sisters!
How To Brew Hocus Pocus Tea
Full disclosure: we played around with this recipe a little bit to get the taste we were looking for; a taste that we felt "conjured" up the coziness, warmth, and nostalgia you feel when watching a nineties Halloween film like Hocus Pocus. The recipe below was the version we liked the best, but feel free to make adjustments to your Hocus Pocus tea depending on your preferences (we made some recommendations below, too!)
Without further ado...
What You'll Need
Tea kettle or pot
Tea infuser (unless you have a tea kettle that comes with it, or you're using tea bags)
Pitcher/mug
*No black flame candle necessary!*
Ingredients
4 cups of water
3 tbsp of earl gray leaves (or 3 earl gray tea bags)
5 dried orange peels, depending on desired citrus level
4 cinnamon sticks
6 cloves
2 star anise
1 tbsp of honey (optional)
1/4 cup of milk or dairy-free alternative (optional — we didn't like the milk in it)
Servings: 4
Notes: We chose earl gray tea because it has the essence of bergamot orange and we were going for a more citrus flavor. But, you can also use black tea, or if you want a caffeine-free option, you can use a rooibos tea. Also, there's no denying that this recipe reminds us a bit of a hot toddy, so feel free to add a little more "spice" to yours (AKA, some whiskey) if you want to take your potion to the next level.
Instructions
Step 1: Set the water to boil the water in a pot or teakettle. Meanwhile, gather the other ingredients.
Step 2: In your teapot or tea infuser, place the black tea leaves (or tea bag), dried orange peel, 3 cinnamon sticks, cloves, and the lone star anise.
Step 3: Once the water starts boiling, pour the water over the blend of ingredients in the infuser. Alternatively, you can also add the ingredients to the pot or kettle and let it steep there (we infused the tea itself but felt the spices are able to penetrate more when steeped directly in the water). In either case, let the mixture steep for about 3-5 minutes (a lot faster than it took the Sanderson sisters to come back to life!). We found that it needed a little bit of a longer steep.
Step 4: When the tea is done steeping, remove the tea bag or strain the loose leaves and spices. Pour the tea in a mug.
Step 5: Add honey to the brewed tea and stir with the remaining cinnamon stick until it dissolves, adjusting the amount to your liking.
